World Is my Oyster p01 (chain not included)
Size: 1.25” x 1.50”
Materials: Silver, Fresh water pearls
Techniques: Reticulation
I first learned about metal reticulation from Mary Patterson, a favorite jeweler of mine from Dayton, OH. I was so enamored with the organic beauty yet individuality of the pieces that I ended up with a collection of reticulated jewelry from different artists from around the world. As I took up metalsmithing, reticulation became one of my favorite techniques.
I was looking for a wedding present for a friend. At the time, I was reading up on European Renaissance Art. While discussing designs with Mary, I mentioned The Birth of Venus by Botticelli and we agreed on a piece based on the concept of the birth of the next phase of my friends’ lives: both of them (the pearls) launching into a new world full of promises. I liked what she came up with that I commissioned this piece as inspiration for my future silversmithing venture. And … I made it!
